This is an issue that really limits my enjoyment of Linux. If the application isn’t on a repository or if it doesn’t have an installer script, then I really struggle where and how to install an application from source.
I have a text file which I want to split into 64 unequal parts, according to the 64 hexagrams of the Yi Jing. Since the passage for each hexagram begins with some digit(s), a period, and two newlines, the regex should be pretty easy to write.
I’d like to implement a function in Bash which increases (and returns) a count with every call. Unfortunately this seems non-trivial since I’m invoking the function inside a subshell and it consequently cannot modify its parent shell’s variables.

I have a program on my path. The program runs when executed with a full path specified. But the program cannot be found when I run it with just its name.
I am trying to understand character special files. From wikipedia, I understand that these files
“provide an interface” for devices that transmit data one character at a time. My understanding is that the system somehow calls the character device instead of calling the device driver directly. But how does the file provide this interface? Is it an executable that translates the system call? Can someone explain what’s up.
