I was wondering: when installing something, there’s an easy way of double clicking an install executable file, and on the other hand, there is a way of building it from source.
This is an issue that really limits my enjoyment of Linux. If the application isn’t on a repository or if it doesn’t have an installer script, then I really struggle where and how to install an application from source.
I installed Pipelight from the PPA archive, according to these instructions.
Installing something in windows takes a click of a button. But every time I try to install something in linux, which is not found in APT, I get so confused.
Is it possible to allow non-root users to install packages system-wide using apt or rpm?
I can’t build my apps on gcc since I use various c++0x features. I’m on Debian 6 (Lenny) and after upgrade/updating I have gcc version 4.4.5-8. I’m unsure which version is required but mingw 4.6.2 works. gcc 4.7.0 is out.
I’ve seen in many places used install -d to create directories and install -c to copy a file. Why not use mkdir and cp? Is there an advantage in using install?
I am running an Ubuntu 12.04 desktop system. So far I have only installed some programs (I have sudo rights).

Compiling and installing software is a pain and problem I cannot overcome. I just want to run down through my understanding of this process with someone more knowledgeable to clear my mind to get to the next level.
