A very simple exercise in GIMP: create a new (blank) image, open a .jpg image as a new layer, and crop that layer.
I need to make a texture for a 3D model of a house. Parts of the house are covered with wooden slats, like this:
This question is the same as this one for Photoshop, however using GIMP and the exception that my Alt key is working, however Alt does not work in GIMP like in Photoshop.

With GIMP, I want to draw a rectangle so I follow the documentation: 14.2. Creating a Basic Shape. I get the expected result.
I am looking for a perspective warp that is able to distort an image in a single direction, i.e. gradually changing the scale and positions of objects within the image vertically while maintaining their horizontal scale and position.
Transparency does not seem to be working with cut/paste within GIMP.
I have used GIMP on Windows before without this issue, but I’m wondering if this is an issue with with GIMP on Linux (on a Chromebook). I’m trying to cut images and paste them with transparent backgrounds, but it isn’t working. Here’s a very simple example to show what is happening:
