How do I use different domain for subdomains in WP Multisite?
I have a WordPress Multisite network. I’d like to have my main site on a seperate domain to my subdomains.

I’m considering setting up a WP multisite network. It would seem to fit my situation perfectly. There’s one thing I still need to find out about domain mapping.
Subdomain multisite gives 404 on sub sites
I used a one click install to install wordpress and then converted it into a sub domain multisite. I have made the required changes to the wp-config and htaccess file.
The main site example.com works absolutely fine.
When I try to add another site, it shows that the site has been successfully added. But the address sub1.example.com shows a page that says no content here and sub1.example.com/wp-admin gives a 404 error.(These are both generic pages similar to what my server shows on any random subdomain)
Multisite on Windows with wildcard subdomains
I want to create a local network on a Windows machine using subdomains. I do not want to edit the hosts file for each new subdomain. But Windows does not support wildcard subdomains, and the Codex doesn’t say anything useful about this topic.
