Sometimes I start editing configuration files in /etc using Vim, but forget to use sudo to start Vim. The inevitable result then is that after finishing my edits I encounter the dreaded notice that I don’t have the permission to save the file.
I need to use the less command with the syntax highlighting of the vim command for python, C, bash and other languages.
I know I can open multiple files with vim by doing something like vim 2011-12*.log, but how can I switch between files and close the files one at a time?
I have two different machines (home and work) running Ubuntu 18.04. Last night vim froze at home. I was in insert mode and typing and went to save (esc :w) and nothing happened. The status bar still reads -- INSERT --, the cursor is still blinking where it was. I was stuck. I couldn’t find a way out. I couldn’t type (nothing happened when I type), I couldn’t move around (the up and down arrows did nothing). It was stuck in insert mode with the cursor blinking where it was.
In short, I’m in an effort to replace less with vim (vimpager). I have settings for scripts to spit out colors (and bold and everything nice) whenever they can. less understands the color codes and displays them nicely. How can I make vim parse the codes and display colors/boldness the way less does?
Historically, there has been a one-to-one correspondence between the bolded versions of the 8 default ANSI colors and the bright versions of the 8 default colors. Back in the day, when a color program demanded the display of bold text, it was probably just easier for terminal emulators to display a brighter version of whatever color the text was (and expect the user to interpret that as bold) than to display a typeface with a bold weight.
Question more or less says it all. I’m aware that /^$/d will remove all blank lines, but I can’t see how to say ‘replace two or more blank lines with a single blank line’
