I need to rename files in batch–the other questions I browsed don’t exactly address my problem. The names of my files are generated non-deterministically, so I can’t predict what they will be named. I do know that they will start with NORMAL and end with -lib*. I’d like to replace everything in between with some string X. For example,

I have a simple periodic cron task that must run as root. I want to use Zenity (or similar) to display a GUI informational dialog to user 1000 (or logged in user or all users) when the cron task finishes.

I’m a long-time Windows user who uses the numeric keypad with the numlock off for navigating text, highlighting it, etc. Shift + Home (7 on the numpad) selects all text till the beginning of the line. In GNOME, pressing Shift + Home on the numpad inputs 7 instead of selecting all text till the beginning of the line.
I’d like to basically pipe a wget command to a file on a remote server over SSH. How can I do this? I know I could simply ssh into the server and have it download the file, but I’d much rather use the local machine to download it and send it.
