I know there are tools like pingdom.com and uptimerobot.com that will monitor your site and let you know if they’re down, but I find that my WordPress site is experiencing the dreaded “error establishing a database connection” more often than desired, and I’d like to get some sort of notification when that happens (but not in the form of a user complaint!). Pingdom and Uptimerobot do not consider that an error, and thus do not push any notifications.
Is there a way to Disable the visual editor for all users without logging in and setting each user’s setting in the admin panel, preferable some way to do it with code in the functions file?
How can I restrict users (based on Capabilities) from editing their published posts after a custom amount of time.
A friend of mine is investigating the use of WordPress for a dynamic site with some hierarchy. Really, at the moment he just wants “nothing fancier than photos and links between pages,” but knowing him, it’s going to get more complex from there.
Following a twitter discussion it seems like wordpress.org have the ability to push security updates for plugins even to sites which didn’t opt-in into receiving automatic plugin update. Can anyone explain the rational for it and how can I block this kinds of updates?

I wonder if there is a way to scale down uploaded media exactly to 50%.
I have a plugin which creates some options in wp_options, but also creates custom post types and is used to populate that post type. Upon install it makes sense to remove the data in wp_options, but with regards to the populated post type, there should be an option for the user to choose whether he wants to keep that data or not.
