I am working on a client proposal and they will need to upgrade their network infrastructure to support hosting an ASP.NET application. Essentially, I need to estimate peak usage for a system with a known quantity of users (currently 250). A simple answer like “you’ll need a dedicated T1 line” would probably suffice, but I’d like to have data to back it up.
I just want to inform the user that the page is busy when it is loading or the action is being carried in the background or when the postback occurs by just changing the mouse cursor to busy. My understanding of load average lead me to be quite shocked with my current system. The CPU in my workstation is an i7 with hyperthreading enabled, and cat /proc/cpuinfo produces 4 ‘cpu’s.
Last Friday I upgraded my Ubuntu server to 11.10, which now runs with a 3.0.0-12-server kernel. Since then the overall performance has dropped dramatically. Before the upgrade the system load was about 0.3, but currently it is at 22-30 on an 8 core CPU system with 16GB of RAM (10GB free, no swap used).
I’m observing a high load average on a certain machine (about 9) in all three load fields. I understand load as the number of processes in state “run” / currently desiring CPU time. Am I correct at reasoning that if N processes are running on my machine this cannot produce a load greater than N?
I have an rsync cron job which is pushing the server load and triggering monitor alerts. If I set the job to be run with a high nice level, would that effectively reduce the impact it has on system load values?
