What is “.xsession” for?

August 11, 2022 by Magenaut

What is the purpose of the .xsession file in the home folder? What should be put in there? The desktop environments don’t use that file and for the X startup from the tty there is .xinitrc.

How to enable killing Xorg with Ctrl+Alt+Backspace

August 11, 2022 by Magenaut

I don’t remember why they did this, but at one point X.org decided that disabling CtrlAltBackspace to kill it was a good idea. I know there’s a way to re-enable it but I don’t remember how. Can someone refresh my memory?

I’d like to be able to paste the X selection using the keyboard. Currently I have to use the middle mouse button to do this.

Custom xkb layout in which one key creates two unicode code points

August 11, 2022 by Magenaut

I am writing a new custom keyboard layout for Xorg, but there is one particular glyph which does not exist in Unicode. It is, however, easy to create it by using a standard letter plus a combining diacritic mark.

Disable mouse (not touchpad!) in Xorg while idle

August 10, 2022 by Magenaut

I am an avid keyboard user, but I still need the mouse every now and then. To minimize the hand travel, I have the mouse located below my keyboard. (On a side note, using the mouse this way feels more natural to my hand.)

Command line to return to the GUI after Ctrl-Alt-F1?

August 10, 2022 by Magenaut

I’m unable to return to the GUI with Ctrl-Alt-F7 (or any of the 12 function keys). I have some unsaved work and I don’t want to lose them. Are there any other key combinations that will allow me to switch back?

Unlisted screen resolution

August 10, 2022 by Magenaut

On my new computer I have 2 screens connected on the igpu of a i7 processor, 1 using hdmi. the other using dvi. Both screens are the same but the one connected using hdmi has a wrong resolution inside X, and it can’t be selected inside the settings. How can this be solved?
