Once a friend of mine (who is an experienced Unix/Linux user) told me that setting root’s shell to something other than sh (i.e bash or zsh) might create problems, because some script might assume that the shell is sh and do something weird.
When using bash completion and an a number of characters have been entered, tabbing ceases to work when the prefix you have typed is matched by more than one of the possibilities.
I need to mount a ntfs partition and be able to use it with unix file system permissions. The problem is that, when I mount the partition using the following fstab entry, I cannot run chown and chmod successfully. It executes without error, but the file access rights are not changed.
Considering this Q&A about the order of execution in the shell as it relates to redirection, and despite the fact that if a file doesn’t exist it gets created first so that cat example.txt | shuf > example.txt doesn’t complain that the file doesn’t exist – which just confirms the order from what I understand – then why is it that about once every thousand times on my system the shuffle works when I do this (backup contains 15 static values each on their line)

I have a color scheme that I like for when I’m in a terminal, but I ssh into the machine I work on from multiple sources (locally, PuTTY, my netbook, etc.) and I want to maintain the same color scheme throughout. Is this possible?
Is it possible to install and use two different glibc versions on the same machine. Where one version is only used to run legacy software, which relies on old glibc binaries?

I can’t build my apps on gcc since I use various c++0x features. I’m on Debian 6 (Lenny) and after upgrade/updating I have gcc version 4.4.5-8. I’m unsure which version is required but mingw 4.6.2 works. gcc 4.7.0 is out.
