Is it possible to set the audio volume using the terminal instead of clicking the speaker icon in the top bar?

I have a set of nice wireless headphones which I use from time to time, in addition to my speakers and normal microphone.
I am using gtk-recordmydesktop to record the video output to my desktop. However, the videos have no sound. All the tutorials I found regarding this involved getting sound recorded from a microphone, while I am interested in getting the sound output recorded. How can I do this? The official FAQ says “The solution is in your mixer’s settings. Keep playing with it ;).” which doesn’t clarify anything.
If I can send audio to the output devices, then I can record the same audio as a wave. With filesystems, you can just setup a loopback filesystem and write binary data on a file instead of a device.
So I have finch, a command line chat client (think pidgin) running on a remote machine that I ssh into. finch has notification sounds and can run a command when certain events occur, letting you pass the sound file in as %s. e.g. mplayer %s

I have had success at creating an RSS feed with enclosures containing episodes of my podcast by simply creating a post and inserting an mp3 file from my media library into it via the robust Add Media functionality of the post editor. However, I have found that the RSS feed created from these posts includes an enclosure for each mp3 file with its length attribute set to zero:
It works for me but I can’t find evidence of it being officially supported so I’m concerned it may not work for everyone.

In WordPress 3.9 there is a new feature that can make a playlist with uploaded audio files. I’d like to use external audio files. I use two web hosts. One for my website and one for my audio files.
