I heard that FIFOs are named pipes. And they have exactly the same semantics. On the other hand, I think Unix domain socket is quite similar to pipe (although I’ve never made use of it). So I wonder if they all refer to the same implementation in Linux kernel. Any idea?
Consider the interactive program interactive. I have to run this program fairly frequently, and each time I run it the first few commands are the same. Obviously, having to type those commands over and over again is a pain. I have collected those command (separated by newlines) in the file cmd. Now I can do cat cmd | interactive to run the commands. The problem is that once cmd has been fully read, interactive recieves EOF and exits.
On the command line, I can redirect or pipe output of a command to a file or another command using the > or | operator after the command. I have come across a less standard situation that I would like to redirect the output to a file, but I don’t seem to have the oppurtunity to redirect it:
if i want to display “aaa” on screen:
The issue of jq needing an explicit filter when the output is redirected is discussed all over the web. But I’m unable to redirect output if jq is part of a pipe chain, even when an explicit filter is in use.
ADVANCED USAGE
Multiple compressed files can be concatenated. In this case, gunzip will extract all members at once. For example:
If I run ls I get colored output which I find pretty handy for quickly getting a glance of the kind of file. When I try to pipe it to less even with the -r and -R flags the coloring always get lost. I am using zsh version 5.0.7. Any ideas? Thanks.
Previously I used source command like this:

Is there any way to make it so that when programs try to perform seek() operations on a named pipe it will come back successful (but act as if the pipe was an empty file) instead of ‘Illegal seek’?
